Ada’s Technical Bookstore and Café New Retail Location Project Advances
Work continues as Model Remodel is busy with Ada’s Technical Bookstore and Café’s new expanded location on 15th Avenue East in Capitol Hill.
Matt Everett, Project Supervisor, says he is enjoying the challenges of a small, unique job site nestled in the heart of this vibrant, friendly neighborhood. The neighbors have expressed how excited they are about this specialty retail addition to their community.
Ada’s offers a wealth of technical books, gifts and author and educational events at its current home on Broadway; however, they were interested in expanding their offerings by including an enhanced retail environment, community space for more events and room for additional office space.
According to Board and Vellum, architect Jeff Pelletier redesigned the current old bungalow building to include more bookshelves, more computer stations, more seating and a new café. The challenge was to seamlessly integrate the current structure with the new second floor office addition. He says, “Model Remodel has been an outstanding team player. They’ve run the project extremely well, and helped bring our design to the next level with their construction and project management expertise.” Communication is key to a successful project regardless of the size and scope. Additionally, the client, the contractor and our firm are all aligned, adhering to principles of sustainability.
Matt shared several eco-friendly strategies being implemented on the project including:
- Adaptive reuse of an existing structure
- Waste management and deconstruction plan
- Use of salvaged and repurposed materials
- Key daylighting strategies
- Low and no VOC finishes and paints
Preservation of an old tree on the property- Low impact landscaping
- Building flexible office space capacity to support local professional and creative-class workforce needs.
We will share more progress updates on the construction process, including an announcement about a proposed Community Open House, when dates are finalized.
