Model Remodel Volunteers for Third Rampathon

For the third consecutive year, volunteers from the Model Remodel team spent a full day this past Saturday, May 18th building an accessibility ramp in South Seattle. Rampathon is an annual event organized by the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties (MBAKS) in which general contractors and other volunteer teams spend a day building wheelchair access ramps across the Seattle area at no cost to the recipients. Since 1993, MBAKS members have provided more than 500 ramps for individuals and families who struggle to get themselves or their loved ones safely in and out of their homes.

The family who received our ramp this year was having a difficult time getting their two wheelchair-bound boys (8 and 17 years old) in and out of the house. Though both boys are currently in the hospital, they have a surprise waiting for them. When they return home soon, they’ll finally be able to go through the front door without their father lifting them up 5 steep steps.

This year we chose to use concrete pier blocks as the base and weather-resistant materials donated by Dunn Lumber to construct over 50 feet of ramp! A special thanks to Tacoma Screw Products for graciously donating screws and fasteners to make this project possible, and of course Honey Bucket!

It was a long day in the hot sun for our 10 volunteers, but we all feel very accomplished and recharged. We know we made a difference for this family and are part of a very special day in our community. We’re looking forward to participating again next year. Great job organizing another successful year of Rampathon, MBAKS!
