A Basement Remodel that Feels like Luxury

What started as an aging basement tucked under a modest Seattle home is now a primary suite worth living in. Before Model Remodel’s crew got to work, this lower level was a patchwork of questionable fixes and outdated charm: tongue and groove wood paneling that had seen better decades, ceilings that seemed to press down on you from above, a layout that felt like a maze, and a half bath that was basically a small closet. Old carpet stitched the rooms together, while the patio outside was more than half exposed cinder blocks.

The homeowner saw potential where most would see a permanent storage unit. They pictured a vibrant primary suite connected directly to the backyard. On the wish list: an expansive bedroom with room to breathe, a five-piece bathroom that could stand up to any boutique hotel, a walk-in closet big enough to hold an expansive and fashionable wardrobe, a laundry area that made chores convenient, and a tucked-away office for quiet moments of focus.

Turning that vision into reality took more than blueprints and good intentions. The Model Remodel design-build team sat down with the homeowner to fine-tune every inch. The structure stayed put, but the feel of the space shifted completely. A regrade and fresh concrete floor were poured for a new start. We moved the main patio door to the centerline of the stairs, carving out more privacy for the new suite and creating a smoother flow from the outdoors in.

A Royal Suite and Soaking Tub

Inside, the bedroom emerged first as a generously sized abode, anchored by a new gas fireplace. Warmth can be felt throughout the space from its scalloped tile façade and a simple wooden mantle. Premium LVT flooring provides a simple and durable solution for the main bedroom area. Generous windows pull in the Northwest light, softening the room’s edges.

Then, there’s the bathroom, center stage as the star of the show. Plentiful tile patterns draw the eye while keeping a neutral tone and feel. A teak double vanity topped with quartz feels as sturdy as it does elegant. Above it, modern rounded mirrors give a softer luxury feel to the space. The walk-in shower is spacious enough for unhurried mornings, complete with a built-in seat for relaxing in the steam. Nearby, a 72-inch soaker tub invites the kind of baths that turn off the world for a while. Golden satin brass fixtures tie the whole suite together, glinting just enough to catch the light but never clamoring for attention.

Refreshing the Laundry Room, Office, and Patio

Beyond the splash and sparkle sits the kind of closet people secretly daydream about. There’s room for everything, and then some. Clothes finally have space to breathe, and so does the homeowner. The laundry area steps up with extra storage and smarter function. No more dreading piles or elbowing past awkward corners. A small but mighty office carves out a pocket of quiet for deep work or hobby-ing without distraction.

Outside, the patio got its own fresh start. The team repoured the whole surface, added a solid concrete retaining wall, and rebuilt the stairs for a welcome that feels intentional instead of improvised. Back inside, the stairway itself got its due: new treads underfoot, a clean new handrail, and a sense that every detail matters, even the ones you pass by without thinking.
