At Model Remodel, we take pride in designing and building spaces that not only meet our clients’ needs but also honor the character and history of their homes. Our latest project was no exception: a second-story addition that rebuilt a cramped, almost-unusable attic into a luxurious, light-filled retreat. This ambitious remodel included raising the roof for a new second story, creating an open loft leading to a luxurious primary suite, and making thoughtful updates to the main floor to improve flow and functionality. Let’s take you through the process, the design decisions, and the results.

Putting the Vision on Paper

The homeowners loved their Craftsman-era house and its charming details, but found the existing upper floor to be very impractical. Low ceilings made the space feel tight and awkward, limiting its usability. They dreamed of a bright, open, comfortable retreat where they could relax, sleep, and enjoy a spa-like bathroom experience—all while preserving the historic charm and character of their home. Plans were drawn for an expansive upper primary suite, and several changes were made on the lower level to spruce things up.

The project began with structural work to build a new second story in place of the old finished attic, creating an entirely new upper level that serves a purpose. The layout was designed from scratch, using the shape of the home, the orientation of the light, and the needs of the homeowners. An open loft acts as a rec-room and leads through French doors into the primary suite, to the walk-through closet, and into a luxurious bathroom—all designed to flow seamlessly while maximizing light and functionality.

Designing the Details

Downstairs, we relocated the stairwell from a cramped corner of the kitchen to an open space in the center of the living room, which dramatically improved traffic flow and opened the main level. With new treads and a gorgeous colorful Annie rug, this staircase adds a bright pop of energy bringing you up into the new addition

The new staircase leads to a bright and welcoming upper loft. This open space sets the tone for the new addition, with bright skylights and a custom stained-glass panel allowing natural light to pass through to the adjoining rooms. The glass, crafted by a local artisan, adds a touch of artistry while preserving privacy. With high ceilings and a lot of floor space, this room has tons of opportunity for activities, whether that be a work out or a movie night.

The Perfect Primary Suite

French doors with intricate baroque glass lead into the primary suite, where the design strikes a balance between vintage charm and modern comfort. A custom built-in alcove serves as a reading nook and pet sleeping area, making clever use of otherwise-unused space. The walls of the alcove are adorned with a playful and elegant black-and-white floral wallpaper from Serena and Lily, adding texture and personality. Built-in cabinetry and shelving on the opposite wall completes the functional aesthetic of the bedroom, giving an extra clean look.

The primary suite features a walk-through closet with vaulted ceilings and LED strip lighting carefully tucked into the slanted ceiling. This subtle lighting highlights the space without overwhelming it, maintaining a clean and sophisticated look.

The showpiece of the remodel is the stunning primary bathroom. Bright blue tiles bring a vibrant aura to the open space, while custom walnut cabinetry and quartz countertops provide warmth and durability. Built-in cabinetry on both sides ensures plenty of storage, keeping surfaces clean and clutter-free – not to mention the built-in sliding laundry hampers. Skylights flood the room with natural light, while carefully selected fixtures offer a diffuse, vintage-inspired glow. Small touches add a lot, like a hand-made stained glass window letting light in from the loft.

BEFORE & AFTER

Craftsman Charm Preserved

Throughout the remodel, great care was taken to honor the original Craftsman style of the home. Custom woodwork, vintage-style lighting, and thoughtful material choices ensured that the new addition felt like an organic extension of the existing home. Even the additional exterior parts of the home were designed to blend seamlessly into the neighborhood, preserving the home’s character while adding valuable square footage.

As with any major remodel, there were hurdles to overcome. Raising the roof and reconfiguring the upper floor required careful planning to ensure structural integrity while meeting the clients’ needs. Additionally, the homeowners’ sensitivity to light required creative solutions: skylights and diffuse fixtures were chosen to provide natural, gentle lighting throughout the space.

The Power of a Home Addition

The completed second-story addition is a testament to the power and practicality of a second story addition. The formerly cramped attic is now a bright, spacious retreat that feels both luxurious and welcoming. The homeowners can enjoy a serene bedroom, a spa-like bathroom, and functional spaces that cater to their daily needs. Downstairs, several small changes make the entire home feel cohesive and intentional.

At Model Remodel, we believe that every home has the potential to become something extraordinary. This project is a perfect example of how careful planning, creative design, and skilled craftsmanship can transform a challenging space into a dream home—while preserving the charm and history that make it unique.
