This DADU remodel exemplifies the wonderful integration of aesthetics and practicality within a compact 260-square-foot space. Transforming a previously non-compliant structure into a fully permitted accessory dwelling unit, this project overcame numerous design and construction challenges to create a comfortable, stylish, and efficient living space. DADUs are on the rise in popularity and provide a great solution for homeowners looking to expand their property to include space for guests, extended family, or renters.
THE BEST USE OF SPACE
A thoughtfully designed bump-out addition expanded the kitchenette, providing essential square footage to accommodate a cooktop, a requirement for DADU certification. Rift white oak cabinetry, complemented by matte black hardware, provides a modern, clean aesthetic. A clever pull-out drawer for cleaning supplies exemplifies the unit’s space-saving solutions, and a compact refrigerator, positioned above base drawers, ensures ergonomic convenience. A hidden pull-out dishwasher and an elevated microwave in a recessed nook further optimize counter space.
In the studio, storage and space was a key priority. A spacious closet provides ample organization, while the strategic placement of a larger water heater on the exterior ensured functionality without sacrificing valuable interior space. The inclusion of LVT flooring throughout ensures durability and a cohesive visual flow.
DETAILS TO TIE IT ALL TOGETHER
Lighting was a central client request, leading to the installation of additional windows and elegant up-facing LED strip lights discreetly placed above crown molding. This up-lighting adds warmth and height to the space, enhancing its airy ambiance. Fiberglass doors and windows were chosen for their durability and energy efficiency.
The bathroom is a true showcase of thoughtful design and luxurious comfort. A glossy fern-colored shower tile contrasts beautifully with a matte iron-toned shower floor, adding depth and a touch of sophistication. A custom expanded-width LED mirror medicine cabinet provides generous storage, a built-in outlet for electronics, a defogger, and smart mirror capabilities. For further comfort, a bathroom heater was installed.
BEFORE & AFTER
Challenges, such as the installation of the water heater and the intricate planning and mounting of the LED strip lighting, were met with innovative solutions. Ultimately, the result is a highly functional, visually striking DADU that meets all regulatory requirements and exceeds expectations for small-space living. This project stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of the design and construction teams, delivering a home that embodies both form and function.
