Laurelhurst Lovely Update

Location: Laurelhurst, Seattle, WA

Scope: Kitchen, Entryway, Laundry Room, Bathroom

Sustainability: Built Green 4-Star

With this home’s most “recent” remodel completed in the 70s, Model Remodel had plenty of potential to work with.

One of the main priorities was a better entryway. Previously, one had to walk up several flights of stairs outside of the home to enter. With the help of Laura Kraft Architect, the team essentially brought the outside in, making a main-floor entryway, followed by stairs. Now, the first thing a person experiences when walking into this lovely home is the amazing, expansive entryway with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Lake Washington view. The windows even help to warm up the house on chilly days, due to all the natural light.

After removing nearly all of the interior structure, the crew was able to reconfigure and rebuild the kitchen and master bath, too. The kitchen was from the 1950s. The crew opened it up partially to the front room. They incorporated a bench seat, which the homeowner likes to sit in and read. In the bathroom, the crew changed the tub to a walk-in shower and added custom cabinets. They also put attention to aging-in-place features, such as big doorways.

The project achieved a Built Green 4-Star rating, with such features as air sealing, LED lighting, insulation, upgraded plumbing and energy-efficient windows.
