Steam Shower Primary Suite

Designer: Cat Schmidt, Model Remodel

Location: Ballard, Seattle, WA

Scope: Primary Suite Remodel

Sustainability: Low-VOC paint, LED lighting, dimmer light switches, energy efficient ventilation fans, low flow plumbing fixtures, cork flooring, water-based stain

What started as a large but awkwardly arranged primary suite is now a gorgeous, modern space that blends incredible features with detailed custom design. This project involved a full remodel of the bedroom, bathroom, and hallway closet area to create better flow, improve functionality, and introduce a calm, cohesive aesthetic throughout the space.

The original layout featured a bulky corner tub that felt more like an obstacle than an invitation to relax. The bathroom also lacked storage, had dated finishes, and didn’t reflect how the homeowner actually used the space. We took the entire suite down to the studs and rebuilt it with intention, making sure each zone had a purpose and a sense of style.

STEAM SHOWER AND SOAKING TUB

We started with a clean, minimalist palette rooted in natural materials. White subway tile and black hexagonal floor tiles lay the foundation, while custom white oak cabinetry, stained in a rich nutmeg tone, warms up the space and adds visual texture. The bathroom half of the layout is grounded by a freestanding soaking tub positioned alongside a full steam shower with frameless glass doors. The built-in bench inside the shower offers a spot to relax while the steam works its magic.

Between the bedroom and bath, we installed a handcrafted wooden slat wall that subtly defines each area without closing things off. This beautiful wall adds a creative element to the room, filters light, and provides a sense of privacy while keeping the space open and breathable. Just beyond the partition, a built-in wooden bench does double duty, offering a spot to sit and sort laundry, as well as concealed storage to keep the area clutter-free.

DESIGNED FROM THE DETAILS UP

We also reworked the hallway closet zone, which had been slowly becoming less usable. Recessed cabinetry now lines the back hall, transforming it into a highly functional (and surprisingly stylish) closet alternative. Large mirrored panels brighten the space and make it easier to get dressed without needing a full dressing room. We replaced the original aging sliding doors with sleek new ones that better complement the updated aesthetic.

The flooring in the bedroom was replaced with cork; a sustainable, comfortable, and sound-absorbing choice that also feels great underfoot. In the bathroom, a thoughtful mix of storage and surfaces makes the most of every inch. Built-in laundry baskets are tucked neatly into cabinetry, while a lowered counter creates a folding station that doesn’t feel like an afterthought. Tall linen storage and heated towel bars add everyday convenience and comfort.

BEFORE & AFTER

THE PERFECT PRIMARY SUITE

Tile wraps from the vanity wall into the shower for an expansive, unified look, and lighted LED mirrors float above the vanities, saving space while offering great lighting for daily use.

This remodel was all about making the home feel more personal, intuitive, and enjoyable. By listening to how the homeowner wanted to live, not just how the space looked, we delivered a suite that feels like a natural extension of their lifestyle. It’s modern without being cold, luxurious without being showy, and built for everyday life with all the right touches of comfort.
